SATURDAY
emo 2 vs Leeds (6-11)
A great chance for us to open up against what was likely to be our best opposition of the weekend, with just enough wind to make the game interesting. We went out knowing that we’d have to treasure the disc if we were going to score convincingly and that we’d have to contest every pass on D if we were going to get it back. We capitalised on Leeds’ throwaways and our pull play was gaining us yards on every offense point. Both teams scored comfortably at both ends of the pitch leaving us a 6-5 Leeds at the half. The team didn’t respect us in the first half which was changed in the second by their bigger players spending noticeable more time on the pitch and they took the game to 11-6 with about 5 minutes left on the clock. We played good scrappy D against Leeds and our O was probably the best we would play all day. Next time we play them they’ll respect us moreemo 2 vs Flyght Club (10-11)
A horrible game for us against an opposition which we should have beaten. We’d changed pitch so we were on an upwind/downwind and we’d gone out still fired up from Leeds. Our offense was seriously lacking and the scrappy style of play we’d had in our early game wasn’t good enough to score efficiently in the increased winds. Flyght club started well going 5-3 up only for us to muscle back and take the half 6-5. The game carried on in this way with far too many throwaways and drops from each team and our complete inability to swing the disc quickly around their zone. We ended up in the cap, in sudden death, on the upwind – nightmare. People we’re getting used to the wind by now but each team had had enough possession to have won the game. We worked it all the way up the pitch, the assist went up and from nowhere Steve gets a massive game saving block. He stands up and absolutely no look hucks it to clear it from their endzone. The disc ends up coming down in our endzone with one of their guys underneath it. No idea what he was doing there but he won Flyght the game.emo 2 vs Lemmings 1 (9-7)
We went out still pissed from our last game but ready to do some damage. The wind offered challenges to both sides and again our pretty gritty offense wasn’t serving us well. Our D was on form though and we were getting blocks and pulling anything wayward out of the air with relative ease. We played some hustle to pressure their weaker players and often got turnovers a few yards short of the goal. Punching these is was less than textbook though and too often lemmings got the disc back. Finished the game with a win if not the one we were imagining on Friday night.emo 2 vs The Brown 1 (6-12)
A good team competing at a level a lot of us thought we should be playing at. A plague on injuries struck the team with about 5-6 people benched for the final game and those left standing well up for it. The Brown played a poachy zone which after a few goes at it we started to walk through with ease. They changed things up to a more standard zone which meant that we’d have to rely on our handlers being disciplined again. Luckily the survivors started to play our way and we worked the disc up convincingly every offense point. On D we played a lot of force fire which cut out their deep game effectively but we had a lot of trouble transitioning from D to O and we spent a lot of the time picking up the disc and turfing it. Not the day we had been planning for but still with a very good opportunity to finish mid table in the B tourSUNDAY
emo 2 vs Oatcakes (11-2?)
With the arrival of our two super subs and the sun deciding to join us we went out sound in the belief that there was no way in hell we were going to let ourselves lose our B tour spot. Oatcakes had nothing on us. Their one or two points came from 50/50 hucks soon after the pull where our deeps had baited it a few yards to much. We practised our Romeo transition and hustle if we turned over but often our offense was slick and fast breaks kept the points rolling in.emo 2 vs Mustard (10-11)
The winner of this game was guaranteed 12th place with the losers having to win two more games to scrape their way into the B tour. They played very differently from us with 3 or 4 guys running their offense by either weaving it the length of the pitch or waiting till one of their receivers was going deep and put the huck up with a high completion rate. Our D was good and made them work but we couldn’t shut down these handlers effectively. Our offense was a million times better than yesterday and the pull play resulted in us getting past their brick on the majority of offense points, to the point where for some reasons all their hucks started going out of the pitch! Pretty sure we had a few chances to close this game off but they ended up putting up a good fight and taking the win. We’ll beat them next time.emo 2 vs Bug (11-6)
Had to win our next two games to salvage pride as much as position now. Bug turned up late and never really threatened us. They had a few guys who could throw and a big guy who could catch but not enough on D to stop our pull play steam rolling through them. Things got a bit scrappy after one of their guys nailed woody good and proper but our offense still ran the game. Highlight would be Kev catching a lead pass about 2 inches outside of the endzone and running on celebrating with the other six people on the pitch and the sideline begging him not to spike it, to which he replied “I know I wasn’t in, I was just really happy to catch it!”emo 2 vs Lemmings 1 (11-4)
The game to make the B tour and we were well up for it. Lemmings turned up on form but had nothing on us. We (and by “we” I mean “Woody”) put away every offense and looked like a team that should’ve finished a lot higher than we did. Sorry Lemmings but we’ve played in the C tour and it just wasn’t for us. Final result 13th with about 20 mins of the final left to watch.Key point from the weekend would be that we can play defence against whichever teams come up against us but until we play offense the way we train we won’t offer much of a threat to teams which we can definitely beat.
