emo v Mustard
On Saturday we had a lot of easy games so decided to treat them as training sessions and as such we had different focuses for each game. In the mustard game we concentrated on the d line swinging the disc. They would have to move the disc from one side to another (either through cutters or handlers) and then back again before a call of “CHEESE” was made and the d line could then score. We did this well a few times however we also scored a couple of times before the cheese shout because we weren’t engaging our brains. The o line where told to concentrate on running the right patterns however we failed to score a single O point without a turn, very disappointing and proved to be a theme for the weekend!!
We ran out easy winners at 11-4.emo v BAF
We knew this game would be close so didn’t have a set focus for this game. We played good D from the first point however due to sloppy cutting, poor decision making, poor execution and dropping easy passes we failed to break them in their first 3 O points. Meanwhile our offence scored relatively easily.
We then started putting our blocks in and after 3-3 we took the half 6-3. We played good D for the rest of the game and were more clinical than BAF when we had the disc however both teams were turning over a lot. We kicked them to touch in the second half and finished the game 11-5 knowing that against better opposition we would have lost.

We practiced our turtle this game which was very effective…once we started talking to each other. We got 2 callaghan’s in this game, one when DT skied Povey and the other (my favourite) when Tim was forcing he got a piece of the disc on the swing and followed it up with skying their handler for the Callaghan!! Sweet
On offence we were concentrating on moving the disc as fast as we could. Almost pretending we were at training and the stall was to 5. We had some moments where it went well and others times not so much. The important lesson we learnt was to play fast but not rushed. Cutting had to be decisive and within our systems, any cut outside of the system almost always resulted in a turnover.
We won 11-1

On defence we focused on lobster transition which worked better in the second half once the sideline supported the on field players. In the first half we were too slow to pick up our men which was mainly due to a lack of communication.
On offence we wanted to stretch our deep game and throw some lead passes to well set up cuts. This didn’t happen very effectively and cost us in later games against Brown and Leeds. We need to cut deep with 100% effort every time someone catches the disc…even if we’re tired.
Think the final score finished 11-4
emo v The Brown (quarter final)
We seemed a little scared in this game. The offence kept putting in the disc in the first half for the d line to come out and get scored on very quickly. We only forced a couple of turns in the first half. We traded to 5-5 and put out a strong d line to take the half…which they did!!
We then came out on O and got scored on which was very frustrating and another theme for the weekend. We need to be better coming out of half time, timeouts and starts of games. It’s purely mental and people need to take personal responsibility for coming out of these quiet periods hard and ready to play.
We had a fight on our hands in the 2nd half and managed to win the game 11-8. We improved our offence on the d line and started scoring up wind when we got blocks with very patient handling.
emo v Vision (semi final)
We came out slow AGAIN and went 2-0 down. We brought it back with strong marks and staying underneath their cutters and ended up winning the game 11-5 (I think) however it felt a lot closer than this throughout and there were many points when our o line were kept on the pitch playing d for long periods which hurt us later on in the day.
emo v Leeds (final)
WE CAME OUT STRONG!! Yes! Was so pleased we took it to them straight away and for me was the most positive thing to come out of the whole weekend.
We went 4-1 up and took the half 6-3. We then seemed to get complacent with our cutting and wanted to just run the game out. We stopped cutting deep and were trying to work in every point underneath which against good teams won’t work. You have to keep playing expansively, breaking the mark and throwing deep lead passes and this all starts with cutting well.
Leeds fought back and scored 3 in a row against us to take it to 8-8 game to 10. So we benched our o line who were tired, not cutting properly and making poor decisions. The ‘d’ line stuck in our offence with a nice lead pass from Brummie to Tim; skying Rich Hims for the score. We then came out on D and got the turn from a nice block when in lobster and we put the disc in after some more patient swinging.
10-8 emo
We learnt a lot this weekend and we’ve got lots to work on before tour, euros and the states. We had moments of brilliance and proved to ourselves at times we can beat anyone we just need to improve our consistency on a few technical points.
Good job this weekend emo1, we played our first tournament where we were favourites and came out the otherside victorious!!
Also, a massive well done to the second team for making B tour!
Now lets go and show the rest of the country how good our squad is!
