Vs BPF
Having lost to BPF at Tour 1 we were all determined to not let the same thing happen again. Our problem last time out was a poor start and leaving it too late to be able to bring it back.
We started this game strong with some very tight defense and began trading the game. BPF last time out only had a long game and as this stuck in our memories we stopped marking underneath and they started to take the game away from us.They again used their deep recievers to just put up long shots and just started to take the game away from us. We dug deep and began to notch up a few points of our own before BPF eventually took the game a bit too comfortably and we went down 15-6?
Vs Gravity
Losing always feels rubbish and we were all set on not continuing a losing streak. We again started this game strong. They immediately came at us with a zone that with great patience and impressive swinging we managed to destroy.
Early on we managed to put them near to their endzone to open up scoring oppotunities. Hammers and thumbers (Vintage Maggers) keyed open their zone as they didn't mark out our poppers.
After the half they eventually switched to man and caused us a few more problems as we had to suddenly step up our offence and run our cuts properly.
After a shortlived comeback from Gravity we composed ourseleves to see out the game 15-12.
Vs Abstract
Having beaten Gravity in the last game we all wanted to finish strongly and finish 2nd in our pool. This game was incredibly tight through no fault of our own.
They didn't like our tight D which was to become a trademark for our weekend. Our forcing was becoming unbreakable with two stall outs from myself and Joe Vaughan. They contested both of these and we ended up having to take the disc near our own endzone as they had aimlessly hucked the disc to ground.
Despite these calls we managed to stick to our offence and put in the points. This game went all the way to sudden death. We got beaten in sudden death with the final score at 14-13.
Despite only winning one game we managed to finish 2nd in the pool thanks to our points difference compared to the other teams. With a good day finished and some impressive defence from everyone involved we would go into Sunday full of confidence.
vs Vision (21-28)
We started this game well and went up a few points at the start. Again our strong defence was apparent and were making vision turn over alot. We struggled at times to put away our offence and werent as clinical as we could have been.
Even still we dug deep and Maggers and Pingu started to develop a little romance and good understanding that Pingu just chased down whatever Maggers put up.
Tim and Joe Vaughan were also heavily involved with Joe Vaughan becoming free at 1st cut of the pull play every time.
We took the half convincingly 8-5. In the second half Vision changed their tactics and started to just play around with only a few of their stronger players getting involved.
They played and ISO with their strong handlers to ignore the rest of their team. With them coming back into the game we found ourselves in another sudden death situation. Again with them ignoring 5 members of their team they put their offence in to take the game 15-14.
We can take alot from this game as we took a first team all the way to the wire and could stand proud that we got everyone involved in this game. We have enough trust in our squad that we know whoever gets on the disc is capable of punishing any team.
Vs Man Up 1 (25-28)
After coming so close in the Vision game we wanted to show we were capable of moving up seeds. Sadly this wasn't to be the case. After having a long break we weren't awake for this game and it took us until the second half to notch up our first point.
Although we were getting hammered it wasn't easy for Man Up to score their points and alot of their play went through Si Weekes.
We managed to score a few more points in the second half. Special mention has to go to Pingu for some mad tracking back skills. A huck went up right next to him and he managed to get close to the disc before Si Weekes made a massive layout bid on it.
Vs Fusion 2 (27-28)
After a miserable performance against Man Up we weren't going to lose again. And as eveyone knows its all about finishing on odd numbers.
We started trading out the game with some clinical offence and Fusion not really having an answer to our pull play. They started to crank up the long shots and unbelievably took the half 8-2! We weren't gonna sit back and let them do us over and in the second half took it to them.
Apart from Tim's interesting side arm that went backwards (he did go on to immediately point block their player to turn them over in the same place) we cranked up our offence and tightened up our defence.
So much so that Bran and Pingu started racing to get to the disc first off the pull! We had the best second half of Ultimate I have ever seen with everyone laying it the line for the team. Bunting was skying people left right and centre, Tim was free deep alot, Joe Vaughan continued to be free off the first cut, Rich breaking their force with ease and everyone digging deep to sprint through their cuts and leave their markers just staring at our sculpted arses.
We took this half 13-5 to win the game 15-13 in the cap. The Cap started at 13 and we put in the final 4 points in row to cap what was a great weekend for the seconds.
Our defence was on fire and our offence got more clinical and effective as the weekend went on. I was hugely proud of everyone this weekend and can't wait for Cardiff when we can show the B Tour what emo 2 is really all about. Winning games with smiles on our faces.
